Looking for the perfect campsite in Carcassonne?

You’re in the right place. Carcassonne is one of those stunning medieval cities that is like stepping into the pages of a history book.

And if you love camping, there are plenty of options to choose from in and around Le Cité de Carcassonne.

A serene sunset view of the medieval fortress of Carcassonne, reflected in the still waters of a nearby river, surrounded by lush greenery and blooming trees.

Where is Carcassonne?

Carcassonne is in the south of France, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. It’s situated in the Aude department, roughly midway between Toulouse to the northwest and the Mediterranean Sea to the southeast.

It’s particularly famous for its medieval fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Map of Carcassonne and the Aude Region

Color-coded map highlighting the location of Carcassonne in the South of France, with surrounding towns and roadways, set against a green and orange background to delineate different regions.

The Only Place to Camp in Carcassonne Itself

Situated at the foot of the city with stunning views of the castle is Camping De La Cité. However, the reviews are not good, and although I’ve not stayed there myself, friends have, and they don’t recommend it.

It’s such a shame as they have a fabulous location and are the only campsite actually in Carcassonne.

However, the customer service is severely lacking, and it’s a site that needs modernisation.

I’m definitely more of a glamper than a camper and loved my luxury stay at Hotel de la Cité. But the thought of sleeping under the stars with the walled city of Carcassonne as my backdrop is tempting.

And with the whole Languedoc region to explore, as well as the citadel and bastide, it’s a great place for a family camping holiday.
