If you’re wondering, is there Uber in France? Then the answer is yes, but there’s a caveat that goes with that answer. While you can get Uber, it’s only available in larger cities. I live in rural France, and getting Uber anywhere in the Charente is impossible as it doesn’t exist. We don’t even have a bus route where I live.

But all is not lost. Part of the beauty of visiting a country like this is experiencing the differences between France and your home country. Plus, you’re on vacation, so no stressing allowed. However, there are alternatives, and I have some options for you so you don’t feel like you’ve completely entered the dark ages.

Is there Uber in France?

Although Uber is available in France, it is not available in every region, city, or town.

France is a large country with hundreds of tiny villages in each department, many of which don’t even have public transport, let alone a taxi service.

In 2023, our neighboring department, Charente-Maritime, trialed Uber in La Rochelle and on the islands of Île de Ré and Île d’Oléron. It was popular enough for it to now be available in other parts of the region.

Where You Can Use Uber in France

Uber’s New ‘By Women’ Option Launches in Paris

If you’ve ever felt uneasy getting into a cab late at night or wished you had more control over who’s driving, Uber’s latest move might put your mind at ease. Women using the Uber app in France can now choose a female driver when booking a ride.

The new By Women feature launched in November 2024 and lets female passengers pick the usual ride categories, like UberX or Green, but with the added option of being matched with a woman driver. There’s no extra cost for using it, and it’s available in Paris and rolling out across other parts of France.

Taking Uber From the Airports in France to Your Hotel or Gite

I used to think Uber was the cheapest option for booking a car to take me from the airport to my accommodation. But in France, it isn’t often the case.

And while some of the larger hotels offer an airport shuttle service, it isn’t usually free, and you will be charged for this, sometimes more than for a pre-booked service.

Even the standard airport taxis can be expensive, especially in cities like Paris.

So, if you want to guarantee a competitive price and service, plus one that doesn’t fluctuate when traffic is heavy, I suggest pre-booking your airport pick-up using one of the Apps.

Is Uber Safe in France?

Yes. Uber is definitely a safe option in France. I’ve always loved the fact that the Uber App tracks everything for you, including license plate numbers. 

Plus, if you don’t speak French, there isn’t that worry about language barriers, as everything is booked in the App. It can save so much confusion, embarrassment, and, of course, mistakes.

Nobody wants to end up in the wrong part of town due to mispronunciation. And trust me, as someone who is learning French, I know how often that can happen. And when it does, it completely changes the meaning of the word.

Safety Tips For Using Uber In France

✅ Ask for your driver’s name. You’ll already know the name of your driver from the App, but ask them to confirm just to make sure it is your Uber and not just a random taxi trying to get the fare.

✅ Take a picture of the license plate. Again, you’ll already have this in the App, but it won’t do any harm to let the driver see you taking a picture of the license plate as a precaution.

✅ Use the Uber ‘share-ride’ feature. This will share your trip details with your emergency contacts in real-time, allowing you to feel much safer.

Can I use Uber Eats in France?

Yes, you can use Uber Eats in France. It’s probably the top food delivery option as it has partnered with many fast food chains and hypermarkets. It is actually a separate platform from Uber, but just as reliable.

However, it’s not the only option available to you.

Two other popular food delivery services in France are Deliveroo and the Stuart App.

Taxis Vs. Uber In France

The main difference between Uber and a traditional taxi in France is that one is hailed on the street, whilst the other is booked via an App.

Personally, I’d rather book through the Uber App, as it’s a better security option, especially for a female traveling alone.

The prices between the two are comparable. Sometimes, Uber is more expensive, and sometimes a cab is. It’s swings and roundabouts. And, as I said earlier, it can often be dependent on the volume of traffic on the roads.

The only other difference is that there are more taxis available in France than Uber. Uber is only available in 20 cities in France, whereas taxis are available in all towns and cities.

Do I Need a Car to Get Around in France?

It really depends on where you’re staying. Without a doubt, if you’re staying outside of one of the major cities and you plan on doing some sightseeing, I’d recommend hiring a car.

There are so many great villages and chateaux to see in France, a car is the easiest and cheapest option for getting around. Plus, a road trip through France is so much fun.
