Dame Sainte-Marie Cathedral or Notre-Dame de Dax

The cathedral is definitely worth a look. The origins trace back to the early Christian period. However, the structure as it stands today has evolved significantly over the centuries, bearing witness to the town’s changing fortunes and architectural trends.

The current cathedral was constructed in the late 17th century, replacing an earlier Gothic church that had fallen into disrepair. 

This reconstruction was part of a broader effort to revitalise Dax and its religious institutions following the Wars of Religion, which had left the town and its buildings in a state of neglect.

There is plenty of Baroque architecture to enjoy, as well as, a Romanesque tower. Inside there is an impressive organ, considered one of the most beautiful in the region, and stunning stained glass windows.

The Archaeological Crypt of Dax

Located beneath the square in front of the cathedral, the crypt allows visitors to step back in time and explore the remnants of Dax’s past civilisations.

The crypt was discovered by accident during construction work in the 1980s, revealing a treasure trove of archaeological artefacts and structures beneath the city’s streets. 

This discovery prompted further excavations, which unearthed a significant portion of the Roman settlement of Aquae Tarbellicae, the precursor to modern-day Dax.
