No 1 Love Locks on Passerelle de l’Abreuvoir
The tradition of love locks isn’t exclusive to Strasbourg. In fact, it gained global recognition in Paris on the Pont des Arts before spreading to other cities around the world.
While it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when the first padlock appeared on Passerelle de l’Abreuvoir, it’s been a growing phenomenon over the past decade or so.
The idea is simple, couples inscribe their names on a padlock, fasten it to the bridge’s railing, and then throw the key into the canal below. It’s a symbolic act meant to represent unbreakable love.
The bridge is near the historic district of Petite France, which certainly adds to its allure.
No 2 A Walk Through Petite France
It’s easy to see why the Petite France district of Strasbourg’s Grand Île has been nicknamed the Venice of France.
It’s crisscrossed with scenic canals and dotted with historic half-timbered houses, some of which date back to the 16th century, giving you a sense of stepping back in time.
The narrow, cobblestone streets and squares, like Place Benjamin-Zix, have plenty of restaurants and cozy taverns to sit and take it all in.
It’s also a great district for shopping, particularly if you’re interested in local crafts or antiques.
But for the best views and pictures, make sure you get to the House of the Covered Bridges. It sits on its own island, flanked by two fortified towers and is a famous spot for pictures. In the Spring, it’s covered in wisteria and is absolutely stunning.
For the best views, head up to the terrace of the nearby Vauban Dam. Originally built in the 19th century, it served as a bathhouse.
