Plus, you’ll be next door to Château des Rohan, a magnificent building which was the former home of the Bishop of Strasbourg.
There are only 25 rooms in this boutique Strasbourg hotel, so if this is the hotel for you — book it ASAP, as this is the busiest time of year.
Café Suisse serves a gourmet breakfast buffet each morning for guests, including the Alsatian fruit tarts from “les pâtissiers” in Mutzig, which Strasbourg is famous for.

Where to stay in Strasbourg Guide
There are five main areas in Strasbourg that you’ll want to add to your “must-see” list when you visit.
Below you’ll find a little more information on each one, plus my personal recommendation on the best coffee shops to try.
No 1 – Grande Île
If you love the site of cobbled streets and medieval timbered houses you’ll want to spend some time in Grande Île. It’s the centre of Strasbourg and brimming with history.
You can’t help but notice Strasbourg Cathedral because it towers above everything with its fabulous Gothic architecture.
And, of course, to add to it all it also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage site.
My favourite coffee shop: Pâtisserie Christian
As a girl who loves her coffee and cake, this is up there on my list of the BEST coffee shops in France.
They have two locations but I liked the one near the cathedral. It’s just like being in an English teashop but with a French twist.
No 2 – La Petite France
This is probably my favourite area in Strasbourg. It’s so pretty and picturesque, and it’s where my favourite hotel, Hotel Cour du Corbeau, is located too. In case you didn’t know it’s where Mozart stayed, and as a classical musician that’s a big deal to me.
La Petite France is right on the canal and surrounded by gorgeous half-timbered buildings, beautiful boutiques and lovely cozy bistros.
My favourite coffee shop: BLOOM Café
This one is an Instagrammer’s dream as the food is just so pretty and, of course, Instagrammable.
Their pancakes are fantastic, and as a coffee connoisseur, I can happily say, their coffee is really good too.

No 3 – Neudorf
If you like a good market with fresh produce, and we have a lot in France, you’ll like Neudorf and the Marché du Neudorf. You’ll find plenty of seasonal fruit and veg and some artisan goods as well.
It’s one of those neighbourhoods that is starting to be quite trendy and is a little more relaxed than the historic city centre. If you have a chance, make sure you go to Parc de l’Orangerie, a lovely green space in the middle of all the half-timbered history.
My favourite coffee shop: Nomad Cafe & Boutique
They describe themselves as a café-boutique with a cosmopolitan feel, and I couldn’t agree more. They have a great vegetarian menu and update things regularly on their Instagram stories.
It’s a little off the beaten track but, definitely a hidden gem.
No 4 – European Quarter
The European Quarter is more modern than the historic centre of Strasbourg and is home to a few important European institutions, such as the European Parliament.
It has a real international flavour but still manages to weave in some of the city’s historical charm.
I have no coffee shop recommendations here I’m afraid.
No 5 – Krutenau
This area is perfect for creatives and those who enjoy the artistic scene. With enough galleries and street art to please even the most diehard art lovers, it’s got a great, vibrant atmosphere that’s different from the rest of Strasbourg.
It also happens to have a great nightlife if you’re looking for something to do after the Christmas market.
My favourite coffee shop: Café Bretelles in Krutenau
A speciality coffee shop with a capital ‘S’, they not only cater for vegans (being a vegan in France is not easy), but they source a lot of their stuff locally too, using the local bakery for their bread, and the local pastry shop for their hot chocolate.
They have two locations, but I’ve only been to the one in Krutenau.

I’d avoid going just before Christmas, as this is when the market is at its busiest. The Strasbourg Christmas market starts in the last week in November, so that’s a good time to go, as well as the first week in December.
