Mike White is swapping Thailand’s beaches for the French Riviera. Season 4 of HBO’s The White Lotus will film at Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez, a 19th-century castle perched on a hilltop overlooking the bay. Production starts in April 2026, and if you thought the show couldn’t get more glamorous, this location might just prove you wrong.

The series has turned every filming spot into a tourist destination. Hawaii saw booking spikes after season one. Sicily became a must-visit after season two. Thailand’s luxury resorts filled up fast during and after season three. Now, France is getting ready for its turn.

Why Château de la Messardière Makes Sense

Château de la Messardière sits on sprawling grounds with views stretching across Saint-Tropez Bay, the Ramatuelle vineyards, and the beaches of Pampelonne. It was built as a wedding present from a wealthy cognac merchant to his daughter, which already sounds like the opening chapter of a White Lotus plot.

The château operates as a five-star Airelles Collection hotel. Guests can book Rolls-Royce rides with chauffeurs to explore the region or head down to the beach club. There’s a tennis court, a large central pool, and gardens that go on forever. Plenty of room for the drama, affairs, and inevitable deaths that come with every White Lotus season.

The location fits White’s pattern of choosing resorts that cater to the ultra-wealthy while offering enough space for characters to collide, spiral, and occasionally murder each other. Previous seasons used Four Seasons properties in Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand. This time, the production has moved away from that partnership and chosen the Airelles Collection instead.

What We Know About Season 4

Details about the plot are scarce, but rumors suggest the Cannes Film Festival might play a role in the story. That would make sense given the timing. Cannes runs in May, and production is scheduled to begin in late April and continue through October. The festival brings the kind of money, ego, and desperation that White loves to dissect.

Filming won’t stay confined to Saint-Tropez. The production will also shoot at other properties along the French Riviera and at a hotel in Paris. White has always mixed multiple locations to create his fictional White Lotus resorts, so expect scenes filmed across southern France to be woven together into one glamorous setting.

Two new cast members have been announced so far: AJ Michalka and Alexander Ludwig. There’s also the possibility of familiar faces returning, following the pattern set by Jennifer Coolidge in season two and Natasha Rothwell in season three.

One thing White has confirmed is a shift in setting. He wants to move away from what he calls the “crashing waves against rocks vernacular” that defined the first three seasons. The French Riviera still offers beaches and water, but the vibe will be different. Less tropical paradise, more European sophistication.

There will also be a change behind the scenes. Composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer won’t return for season four due to creative differences. His haunting, percussive score became one of the show’s signatures, so the new music will mark a notable departure.

And yes, people will die. White has made that clear. The show wouldn’t be The White Lotus without at least one body by the final episode.

The French Riviera Connection

Saint-Tropez has been a playground for the wealthy since the 1950s. Brigitte Bardot put it on the map when she filmed And God Created Woman there in 1956. After that, the town became synonymous with yachts, beach clubs, and people who have more money than sense.

Château de la Messardière sits above all of that, removed enough to feel exclusive but close enough to the action that guests can slip down to town whenever they want. It’s the kind of place where you might run into a film star at breakfast or a tech billionaire by the pool.

The property itself went through a transformation before becoming what it is today. After its original construction as a private residence, it operated as a hotel during the Roaring Twenties. Then it fell into disrepair. A restoration in the 1980s and 1990s brought it back, and Airelles took over in 2019. They completed further renovations and reopened the château in 2021, just in time to become a White Lotus location.

The hotel is luxurious but with history and character, not just the sterile perfection of a brand-new resort. White tends to choose locations that offer both beauty and a sense of place, somewhere that feels real even when the drama playing out is deliberately heightened.

What This Means for France

The so-called “White Lotus effect” is already being discussed in travel industry circles. Hotels and tour operators in Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand all reported increased interest after their locations appeared on screen. Some properties saw booking requests specifically mentioning the show.

France doesn’t exactly need help attracting tourists, but the Riviera could see a surge in Americans looking to recreate the on-screen experience. Saint-Tropez already draws plenty of visitors, but the exposure from a hit HBO series will put Château de la Messardière and the surrounding area in front of millions of viewers who might not have considered it before.

Whether that’s a good thing depends on who you ask. Locals in previous White Lotus locations have had mixed feelings about the sudden influx of fans wanting to visit every spot that appeared on camera. But for hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, it’s been a windfall.

Paris will also benefit from whatever scenes are filmed there. The city is already one of the most visited in the world, but being part of The White Lotus universe adds a layer of cultural cachet that money can’t buy.

When Can You Watch It?

There’s no official release date yet, but late 2026 or early 2027 seems likely. Production begins in April and runs through October, which gives plenty of time for editing and post-production before it hits screens.

In the meantime, you can visit the Château de la Messardière yourself if you’ve got deep pockets and a sense of adventure. Rooms start at several thousand dollars a night, so it’s not exactly a budget-friendly option. But if you want to stay where the next season will film before the White Lotus effect kicks in and availability becomes impossible, now is the time to book.
