Looking for the best bed and breakfasts in La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast of France?

Well I live just over an hour from La Rochelle and know many of the B&Bs, or Chambre d’Hôtes, as they’re called in France.

Knowing where to stay when travelling to a different country can be difficult. So today, I’m sharing my top picks for staying in a typical French bed and breakfast in La Rochelle.

I love staying in someone’s home as it gives you the chance to hear the real stories of the place you’re visiting, rather than what the tourist office tells you.

This is why I suggest you stay in a bed and breakfast if you’re visiting La Rochelle, so you too will get a true glimpse into the past of this seaside town with all its Maritime history.

What is a B&B in France?

To really immerse yourself in French culture, a B&B in France is one of the best ways to go.

Known as a chambre d’hôte, which literally translates as guest’s bedroom, you stay in someone’s home.

There is also table d’hôte, which is a B&B with dinner added in for good measure. This is my favourite.

An old French building with blue shutters and an arched entranced with flower pots either side

Why stay in a bed and breakfast in France?

Where do I start? A B&B in France is different to other countries, where often, they aren’t much more than a room rented out in someone’s house, and that’s it.

In France, when you go to a French-run bed and breakfast, you’re welcomed not only into their home but their way of life too.

An authentic French chambre d’hôte is a unique experience where you’ll experience the culture first-hand.

And as they’re limited to only five rooms, you’ll never feel like one of a number.

Why you should choose a table d’hôte instead of a chambre d’hôte

My recommendation, try a table d’hôte at least once during your trip. You’ll experience one of the things France is famous for, food.

Meal times are sacred in France and are usually not a short affair. You’ll enjoy a 3 or 4 course meal, including wine, and you’ll taste local delicacies you wouldn’t otherwise try.

And, they have local knowledge that the hotels just don’t have. Over dinner, they’ll tell you about those hidden gems off the beaten track, show you the best places to eat and help you discover things that aren’t on the tourist maps.

Bottom line, the French love to show off their country and are very proud of their heritage. By staying in a French chambre d’hôte you’ll experience the real France and not just the tourist version.

FAQs About staying in a B&B in La Rochelle

Are bed and breakfasts more expensive than hotels?

Bed and breakfasts can be more expensive than hotels, depending on the location and amenities offered. Many bed and breakfasts are located in rural areas, meaning they often come with breathtaking views or access to nature that you might not find in a hotel.

Additionally, bed and breakfasts are usually smaller operations, which can add to the cost of your stay.

On the other hand, there are plenty of budget-friendly bed and breakfasts available too – you just have to know where to look!

What is the difference between a bed and breakfast and a hotel?

A bed and breakfast (B&B) is usually a small, cosy establishment often housed in a converted residential property, offering personalized service and a unique, homely atmosphere. In contrast, a hotel is typically a larger commercial establishment that provides a wider array of services such as room service, fitness centres, and dining facilities, often prioritizing efficiency and standardized service over personal touch.

What is La Rochelle popular for?

La Rochelle is renowned for its rich maritime history and its beautifully preserved old port, known as “Vieux Port”. It’s also known for seafood, in particular oysters.

What does bed and breakfast include?

A bed and breakfast typically includes a comfortable overnight stay along with a hearty breakfast the next morning. Some may also offer additional amenities such as Wi-Fi, parking, and personalized services to enhance your stay, but these vary by establishment.

Final Thoughts: Staying in a bed and breakfast in La Rochelle

Staying in a bed and breakfast in La Rochelle is the perfect way to experience the city.

From the convenience of being close to the city centre to the chance to learn about local culture and customs from people who live there, a bed and breakfast in La Rochelle can truly be a unique experience.

Whether you’re travelling solo or with friends, it’s an excellent way to make the most of your stay in La Rochelle.
