The short answer to ‘Does it snow in France’ is yes.
But it doesn’t snow everywhere in France, so you need to know the regions to visit to find snow.
And as France is known worldwide for its snowy mountains and skiing, it’s a haven for ski enthusiasts, attracting millions of tourists each year. Celebrity spotting in the French Alps, especially in Courchevel 1850, is fun too.
I live about a five-hour drive from the Pyrenees, and I took my hubby for his birthday in January, it was nothing short of spectacular seeing the snow glistening away on the mountains.

Yep, it really does snow in France. However, if you’re planning a trip to the South of France, don’t hold your breath, as you aren’t likely to see any snow.
It’s the same where I live in the Charente and, in fact, in the majority of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region.
Although we sometimes see snow, it isn’t the norm for us, and we certainly don’t get enough snow to build snowmen or ski. But when it does happen, it’s like a scene straight out of a fairy tale.
So if it’s snow in France you’re after, keep reading, and I’ll tell you exactly which region to go to and the best resorts to stay in for some winter fun in the snow.
When is winter in France?
First, let’s talk about winter in France. It is listed as officially starting around the 21st or 22nd of December and lasts until late March, typically ending around the 20th.
However, the weather can start to feel wintery from late November onwards. Although, it does depend on where you are.
Where we are in the South West of France, we can still be sitting outside enjoying the sunshine in November, so winter doesn’t hit us as quickly as it does in the more Northern regions or mountains and Alps.
Is winter bad in France?
The term ‘bad’ is rather subjective when discussing winters in France. For some, the chilly temperatures and heavy snowfall in regions like the Alps and the Pyrenees might be considered ‘bad’.
However, these conditions are ideal for winter sports enthusiasts who flock to the area for skiing, snowboarding, and other snowy adventures.
Plus, the snow-draped landscapes are simply breathtaking, offering picturesque vistas you simply won’t get at other times of the year.
On the other hand, in less snowy regions like Paris, winters are typically milder. You’re less likely to see heavy snowfall, but when it does snow, the city transforms into a winter wonderland becoming an Instagrammer’s dream.
The temperatures can drop, but it’s rarely severe enough to hamper an adventure in this magical city. You can still enjoy outdoor attractions and the festive Christmas markets that pop up around Paris at this time of year.
In the southern regions, like the French Riviera, winters are even milder, with minimal snowfall. It’s a great time to visit if you prefer avoiding the summer crowds.
When Does It Snow in France?
When it comes to snowfall in France, the timing and intensity can vary significantly across the different regions.
In the mountainous regions, such as the Alps and the Pyrenees, snow usually begins to fall in late November and can continue right through until April.
These areas see the heaviest snowfall in France, with an impressive average of 5.5 metres per season in the Alps, and roughly 7 metres in the Pyrenees.
When we visited the Pyrenees in April one Easter a few years ago, the snowfall wasn’t too bad. We still had snow chains fitted to our car, just in case, but could probably have done without them.
In the central regions, including Paris, snowfall is less frequent and typically occurs between December and February. Here, you can expect an average snowfall of around 1.2 metres per season.
However, you must remember that it’s relatively rare for the snow to stick around for extended periods in these areas.
As for the southern parts like the French Riviera, snowfall is quite rare. In the event it does snow, it usually happens in the coldest months, January and February, but the accumulation is minimal, often less than 10 cm.

December nearly always brings snow in France in the mountainous regions, and they’ll usually be covered in thick layers of snow, offering superb conditions for skiing and snowboarding.

January is typically the coldest month of the year in France, not unlike the rest of Europe, so heavy snowfall is normal, especially for the mountain regions. However, for the rest of France, January can be really rainy and grey.
Perversely, I’ve been known to have a BBQ ‘dans le Jardin in January in my shorts, so you never quite know what you’ll get. So stick to the mountains for guaranteed snow.

February can be a cantankerous month, a bit like January, in the more regional parts of France. But in the mountains, you’ll still find heavy snowfall perfect for skiing.
The ski resources are still doing a roaring trade, and people flock to the French ski mountains.

The only time I’ve known it snow where I live in the Charente is in March, so I’d have to say yes, it does snow in March in France. You’ll still see heavy snowfalls in the Pyrenees and French Alps too.
Weirdly, March can be the best month for snowfall in France, it really depends on the year.

While this region isn’t well-known for its heavy snowfall, it does receive a moderate amount of snow during the winter months.

Here, the majestic Massif Central mountains beckon with their snow-capped peaks and inviting ski slopes. The Loire Valley, with its snow-dusted chateaux, offers a fairy-tale-like experience in winter.

For me, though, the most unique experience is a husky sled ride in the Northern Alps. It is an absolute must, not to mention great fun.
