If you’ve never been skiing before, the thought of doing it for the first time can be quite daunting. It’s a scary notion, the idea of hurtling down a hill, Bridget Jones style, completely out of control. As a non-skier myself, I’ve spent quite a bit of time researching the best French ski resorts for beginners, to try and avoid exactly that scenario.
When I first moved to France, skiing was one of the top things on my list of ‘things to do in my new life in France’. But as much as I couldn’t wait to visit the French Alps, the thought of actually getting out there on the slopes scared me senseless. Not to mention the paralyzing fear of being on slopes that obviously weren’t for beginners.
So, I wanted to find a resort where I’d not only feel comfortable as a complete novice, but would also find some good non-skiing activities as well. After all, après-ski is a big part of a skiing vacation as well. So, if, like me, you’re planning a skiing trip but have never stepped foot on the slopes before, I think you’ll find this list of beginner-friendly resorts helpful.
The 10 Best Ski Resorts in France for Beginners
No. 1 Chamonix
Chamonix is my top pick for quite a few reasons. However, the most notable was that it hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924.
My daughter used to figure skate competitively and represented Great Britain, so I was keen to see where the first Olympians had skated.
And then, of course, there is the setting in the stunning Mont Blanc region, and the fact that it is one of France’s oldest ski resorts.
The town itself is lovely and like stepping into a Christmas card scene, with its picturesque streets and traditional alpine architecture.
There is plenty to do in Chamonix as well, with a good selection of cafes, shops, and restaurants giving you an authentic taste of French mountain life.
Why Chamonix is perfect for beginner skiers
With its multiple nursery areas and varied terrain, Chamonix is the perfect place to learn how to ski. Its slopes in Les Savoy and Les Planards are designed to ease new skiers into things with an extensive range of green and blue pistes. If I can do it, anyone can.

If you want to be wowed, the Aiguille du Midi cable car ride is a truly spectacular experience.
It takes visitors to the Aiguille du Midi peak, standing at a staggering 3,842 meters, providing some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the French Alps, including a close-up look at Mont Blanc.
But the pièce de résistance is ‘Step into the Void‘, a glass box suspended over a 1,000-meter drop, providing an unforgettable view of the surrounding peaks.

Flaine is in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps, part of the extensive Grand Massif ski area. It’s known for its reliable snow conditions, being at an elevation of about 1,600 meters.
Built in the 1960s by renowned architect Marcel Breuer, Flaine has taken steps to minimize its ecological impact and places a lot of importance on sustainability, always a tick in my book.
It also has an impressive array of artworks, including a Picasso sculpture.
Why Flaine is perfect for beginner skiers
The resort is brilliant for beginners as it has the longest beginner slope in all of Europe, Les Cascades. They also have some great nursery slopes in Flaine Forum and Flaine Forêt, away from all the fast skiers flying past at a rate of knots. Plus, there are over 30 blue and green runs.

If you’re looking for something fun to do, it doesn’t get much better than dog sledding. Imagine driving through the snow whilst being pulled along by your own team of beautiful husky dogs.
You’ll learn how to work the sledge and command the dogs so they take you effortlessly across the snow.

La Plagne is a collection of 11 villages ranging from traditional Alpine villages like Montchavin to the more modern, purpose-built areas like Plagne Centre. It’s incredibly diverse, allowing visitors to choose an experience and accommodation that suits their style.
Many hotels offer ski-in/ski-out options, and the villages are well-connected by free shuttle buses, making it easy to explore the entire area.

Les Deux Alpes is often referred to as an ‘upside-down resort’ because the beginner slopes are at the top rather than the bottom. This means you get spectacular views as a novice skier, which isn’t the case at other resorts.
It’s located in the Oisans region of the French Alps, in the Isère department of southeastern France, between the northern and southern Alps.
And it’s known for its vibrant après-ski scene and having a large, glacier-based ski area, meaning skiing is possible in the summer months as well as the winter months.
Why Les Deux Alpes is perfect for beginner skiers
The ski schools are excellent, and beginners can opt to either go to the top and ski down Demoiselles run, which is nice and flat, or stick to the bottom nearer to the city centre. There are plenty of blue runs there as well, so you have the choice.
Plus, there is the option of taking the ski lift down from the top if you’d rather not ski down.
