Each year, the French Alps welcome millions, drawing in both seasoned skiers and beginners alike with their promise of exhilarating slopes and breathtaking vistas.

Characterised by their breathtaking snowcapped peaks and extensive ski runs, the French Alps offer a diverse range of winter activities beyond skiing. The region is not only a sports enthusiast’s paradise but also a hub for those looking to indulge in a little bit of Alpine culture.

Now although many skiers like to return to the same resort year after year, some are looking for new adventures, and it doesn’t come much better than the French Alps.

What is it about the French Alps that is so appealing?

According to a recent Forbes report, where over 6,000 ski resorts were analysed worldwide, the French Alps nabbed the top spot.

Taking the coveted No. 1 spot was Les Trois Vallées, which includes the resorts of Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Méribel and Courchevel.

The resorts were scored on things like annual snowfall, difficulty and variety of slopes, number of ski lifts, reviews, après-ski, and even the amount of Instagram mentions.

And France came in at no. 1, 2 and 10.

6 Reasons to Visit the French Alps this Winter

No. 1 The Best Skiing Resorts in the World

The French Alps boast some of the world’s most renowned resorts, each offering a unique experience.

  • Chamonix Mont-Blanc, a historic site known for hosting the first Winter Olympics, offers a blend of challenging terrain and breathtaking views, ideal for experienced skiers seeking thrilling runs like the Vallée Blanche.
  • Courchevel, part of the extensive Les Trois Vallées, is famed for its luxurious amenities and diverse slopes that cater to both beginners and experts, making it a favourite among families and luxury seekers.
  • Val d’Isère, in partnership with Tignes, forms the vast Espace Killy ski area known for its reliable snow conditions and a mix of varied terrains suitable for all skill levels, combined with vibrant après-ski culture.

No. 2 Winter Activities for Non-Skiers

Snowboarding enthusiasts will find numerous resorts with dedicated parks and slopes, offering both challenging terrains for seasoned boarders and gentler options for beginners.

Winter hiking and snowshoeing in the Alps is an activity that combines physical exercise with the serene beauty of snow-covered landscapes.

Numerous trails are available, ranging from easy walks to more demanding treks, each providing a unique perspective on the Alpine scenery.

Passengers in a bright red horse-drawn sleigh enjoy a winter outing, with a sturdy brown horse in harness against a backdrop of snow-covered hills and evergreen trees. The clear sky above and the crisp snow beneath highlight a serene winter landscape, suggesting a leisurely tour through a scenic, hilly terrain.

Dog sledding offers a unique way to experience the alpine landscape, where visitors can either take the reins or sit back and enjoy the ride, guided by skilled mushers and enthusiastic canine teams.

The region’s natural and man-made ice rinks, set against the backdrop of snow-covered mountains and Alpine villages, provide a picturesque setting for ice skating.

Horse-drawn sleigh rides are a must. Gliding through the serene alpine landscapes, wrapped in warm blankets with the gentle sound of sleigh bells, these rides offer a timeless way to enjoy the winter scenery.

The spread includes a terracotta pot of bubbling gratin, a salad bowl with mixed greens, sliced baguette, bottles of olive oil, mini black pots with what appears to be a mushroom dish, and a foamy beer in a clear glass. The table setting is garnished with pine branches, evoking a cozy, festive atmosphere.

No. 3 Fabulous Food & Gastronomic Experiences

The French Alps is known for its Savoyard cuisine, hearty, comforting dishes that are well-suited to the cold mountain climate, with a strong emphasis on ingredients like cheese, potatoes, and cured meats.

Fondue, a communal dish where diners dip bread into a pot of melted cheese, epitomises the region’s culinary tradition.

Raclette, another popular cheese-based dish, involves scraping melted cheese onto potatoes and charcuterie.

If it’s food with a view you’re after, there are many high-altitude gourmet restaurants that combine stunning mountain views with gastronomic menus, showcasing both local ingredients and international cuisine.

In the background, the impressive Mont Blanc massif, with its snowy peaks and rugged glaciers, dominates the skyline. The contrast between the verdant foreground and the icy peaks creates a stunning natural tableau, illustrating the diverse beauty of the Alps in summer.

No. 4 Breathtaking Scenery and Nature

The region’s landscape ranges from snow-capped peaks to verdant valleys and crystal-clear lakes, offering a visual feast for visitors.

The iconic Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest peak, stands as a centrepiece of the Alpine range, drawing climbers and photographers alike.

The National Parks, like the Vanoise National Park, protect many native species and ecosystems, providing a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.

In winter, the snow transforms the landscape into a serene white wonderland, while in summer, the melting snow reveals lush greenery and wildflowers.

The houses have snow-covered roofs and are surrounded by pine trees and a clear snowfield in the foreground. The village is set against a backdrop of majestic alpine mountains under a bright blue sky, evoking a sense of peaceful winter living.

The cultural fabric of the French Alps is woven through its charming villages and rich traditions. These small communities, often nestled in valleys or perched on mountain slopes, are gateways to experiencing the region’s heritage.

Each village, with its unique character, invites visitors to explore a different facet of Alpine culture.

Music and festivals play a central role in Alpine life. Traditional folk music, often featuring instruments like the accordion and alpenhorn, is a common accompaniment to local celebrations.

Festivals, ranging from winter carnivals to summer fêtes, showcase the customs and stories of the region.

The setting sun bathes the sky in shades of orange and pink, highlighting the rolling hills and peaks in the distance, which create a stunning backdrop for the nestled village below.

Craftsmanship in the Alps is another testament to its cultural richness. Artisans in these villages continue age-old practices, creating items like hand-carved wooden decor, pottery, and textiles.

The architecture of the Alpine villages, with their chalet-style houses, stone churches, and ornate balconies, adds to the cultural landscape.

Many of these villages have preserved their historical appearance, offering a glimpse into the past and a contrast to the modern ski resorts.

A person sits contemplatively in an outdoor hot tub on a wooden deck, with a breathtaking view of snow-covered hills and valleys of the French Alps in the background. The scene is peaceful, with a deck chair nearby and a tall, metallic chimney of the hot tub adding a modern touch to the natural landscape. The overcast sky suggests a cold but serene winter day, perfect for relaxation and enjoying the mountain scenery.

No. 6 Wellness and Relaxation Experiences

The region’s spas and wellness centres offer a range of experiences, from traditional treatments to modern therapies, set against the backdrop of the stunning Alpine landscape.

Thermes de Saint Gervais, near Mont Blanc, offers thermal pools with mineral-rich waters known for their healing properties.

Many of the luxury wellness resorts combine spa treatments with holistic health programs featuring saunas, steam rooms, and relaxation lounges, along with a range of massages and beauty treatments.

Some, like the Spa at Les Fermes de Marie in Megève, offer treatments that incorporate local ingredients, such as mountain plants and minerals, connecting guests with the natural environment of the Alps.
