Every turn leads to a pastel-shaded façade or a bustling café, serving up the kind of Provençal fare that makes you linger over lunch.

The shimmering Mediterranean coastline beckons with its stunning turquoise waters. The beautiful Promenade des Anglais is the perfect backdrop for seaside strolls and people-watching.

The jaw-dropping views from Tête de Chien aren’t just photogenic; they once offered strategic vantage points for spotting approaching ships. Perched high above the glittering principality, Tête de Chien offers the most breathtaking viewpoint along the Côte d’Azur. Time your visit for sunrise or sunset, and you’ll witness the Mediterranean sky painted in hues of gold and pink, creating an unforgettable romantic moment.

Step into the aromatic world of French perfumery at the historic Fragonard factory. Centuries-old traditions come alive here as master perfumers reveal the secrets behind crafting the perfect scent. You can even create your own signature fragrance, which I did, and I still have the bottle. It was so much fun to do and gives you a great insight into what goes into making the perfume we take for granted.

It’s a toss-up between Saint-Paul de Vence and Èze for which is my favorite village on the French Riviera. This village inspired everyone from Chagall to Picasso, embodying the perfect French Riviera aesthetic. Artists flocked here for the light, a golden glow that bathes the hills at sunset. 

The ramparts, built in the 16th century to fend off invaders, now offer panoramic views over vineyards and olive groves. My little secret? Look for the pétanque games locals play in the square, a slice of authentic Provençal life.

The jewel in the crown is the Maeght Foundation, where contemporary masterpieces blend seamlessly with nature in their stunning sculpture garden. If your French Riviera travel includes a bit of luxury, Cannes is where glitz reigns supreme. But there is more to Cannes than just the red carpet. Its history stretches back to Roman times when it was a small Ligurian port known as “Canois.” 

In the Middle Ages, it was a quiet fishing village under the watchful eye of the monks at Île Saint-Honorat, one of the Lérins Islands off the coast. Its transformation began in the 19th century, when Lord Brougham, a British aristocrat, fell in love with the area and helped put it on the map for European high society.

I love spending lazy afternoons here, watching fishing boats bob in the crystalline waters while colorful buildings in sherbet hues line the waterfront. The gentle curve of the bay creates a natural harbor that’s simply postcard-perfect.

Train-Linked Day Trip

Just a quick 10-minute train ride from Nice, it’s the perfect addition to your South of France travel plans. I often hop on an early train to secure my favorite spot on the beach, then spend hours meandering through the town’s enchanting alleyways, where bougainvillea cascades down ancient stone walls and local cafés serve fresh catch-of-the-day.

Menton: Citrus-Infused Charms

In Menton, the Riviera’s “Pearl of France,” lemons reign supreme; it’s the South of France aesthetic you were looking for. Each February, the town’s Fête du Citron features extravagant sculptures made entirely from lemons and oranges. And here’s a fun fact: Menton’s mild microclimate means it’s one of the few places in France where lemons grow year-round.

Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden

The garden, created in the 19th century by Sir Percy Radcliffe, a British colonel, spans over three hectares and features an impressive collection of exotic plants. There are towering palms and rare species like the Buddha’s Hand citron tree, and you can enjoy the serene ponds filled with water lilies.

The garden’s subtropical microclimate allows for a unique mix of flora, making it a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts and a peaceful retreat from the bustling Riviera.

The medieval streets of Menton’s old town cascade down to the Mediterranean like a pastel waterfall. Ochre and terra-cotta buildings create a warm palette against the azure sea, while hidden staircases and vaulted passageways reveal surprising harbor vistas.

The morning light here is particularly magical, casting long shadows across centuries-old stones and illuminating the town’s Italian-influenced architecture.

Saint-Tropez: Iconic Glamour

Then there’s St Tropez France, the Riviera’s party capital. Saint-Tropez has a long and colorful history, beginning as a modest fishing village in the Roman era. During the Middle Ages, it became a fortified town to defend against pirate attacks. By the 17th century, it flourished as a trading port, with its harbor buzzing with merchant ships. 

However, its transformation into a cultural icon began in the late 19th century, when artists like Paul Signac and Henri Matisse were drawn to its stunning light and vibrant landscapes. This artistic heritage paved the way for Saint-Tropez to become a haven for writers and painters and, later, a glamorous retreat for the rich and famous.

Adventure lovers shouldn’t skip the Calanques near Cassis. It’s the South France aesthetic at its best. These dramatic limestone inlets, carved by nature, are best explored by boat. Did you know some of these hidden fjords were WWII smuggling routes? 

These hidden coves, accessible only by boat, became ideal for resistance fighters and locals aiding the French Resistance. Supplies, messages, and even people fleeing Nazi occupation were discreetly transported through these natural corridors under the cover of darkness. The towering cliffs provided shelter from prying eyes and patrols, while the maze-like network of Calanques allowed smugglers to evade capture.

Today, they’re havens for kayakers and swimmers seeking a quieter slice of the Riviera.

The Route du Mimosa takes you from Bormes-les-Mimosas to Grasse. The best time to do this drive is between January and March, when thousands of mimosa trees transform the coastal route. The sight combined with the perfume is unbelievable, and the pictures don’t do it justice.

Each curve of this 130-kilometer journey reveals another breathtaking display of nature’s artistry. At Massif du Tanneron, the hillsides shimmer with delicate yellow flowers. The sweet, honey-like perfume of mimosas fills the air, creating an intoxicating backdrop for one of France’s most spectacular scenic drives.

Verdon Gorge: Adventure and Awe

Finally, for heart-stopping natural beauty, the Verdon Gorge is unmatched. This emerald canyon, nicknamed “Europe’s Grand Canyon,” offers everything from kayaking to cliffside picnics. The gorge was once a seabed carved over millions of years by ancient rivers.

It was formed millions of years ago during the Triassic period when a shallow sea covered the region. Over time, tectonic shifts and the erosion caused by the Verdon River carved the dramatic limestone cliffs that soar up to 700 meters today. 

The area’s history also includes traces of prehistoric human activity, with tools and cave paintings discovered in nearby sites. During the Middle Ages, the gorge’s rugged terrain served as a natural barrier, protecting villages in the region. In modern times, the Verdon River was harnessed for hydroelectric power, with several dams constructed in the mid-20th century. These dams created turquoise reservoirs that now draw adventurers and nature lovers worldwide.

Take the plunge into Europe’s deepest canyon. Gliding through turquoise waters in a kayak, you will see towering limestone cliffs rise 700 meters above, creating nature’s most dramatic amphitheater.
